What Should You Do When Your Dymo LabelWriter 450 Is Printing Blank Labels?

Referring again to our previous article, we mentioned the following as the possible reasons for this problem:

    • The print settings could be wrong.
    • The optical sensor could be dirty.
    • You may have placed the label roll incorrectly on the spindle.
    • Your Dymo labels may already be too worn out from prolonged or improper storage.

We suggested the following solutions:

  • Check your print settings. You may have chosen the wrong margins, label size, layout, etc. If you are printing straight from another program, e. g. Microsoft Word, check for those parameters under “Page Setup.” If you are printing labels from a Dymo design wizard, you can double-check the printer settings or layout in the edit area. 
  • You can avoid dirt and dust buildup on the printer’s sensor with good maintenance, which we have also discussed in previous articles.
  • When reloading your LabelWriter 450, make sure that the label enters the feed slot face down. There is a big arrow guide on the spool that lets you know where the label roll’s loose end should be. You can simply follow that arrow.
  • Dymo labels are made of uncoated thermal paper, so they have a lifespan of 6-12 months, depending on storage conditions. To keep costs low, you can store your labels in a cool, dry and well-covered place to prolong their lifespan. 

In addition to these, other issues may come up with software changes.

  • If you have a Windows 10 PC, your labels may come out blank if you’re using the Dymo Label™ software on it. We suggest switching to Dymo Connect for Desktop.
  • In March 2021, Microsoft released a software update that affected the performance of a lot of printers, including Dymo LabelWriters. Until its glitches are resolved, you may have to uninstall this update.
    • Go to Settings > Update & security > Windows update > Advanced option > View update history.
    • Right-click on your latest Microsoft update and click “Uninstall.” Follow the prompts.

Printing blank labels may also be a sign of a more serious problem, e. g. a busted or worn-out print head. If none of the solutions above are helping, you may consider having your unit checked by a qualified technician.

How Do You Reset a Dymo LabelWriter 450?

Some Dymo LabelWriter 450 users encounter “printer freezing” or “hanging” every so often. It can happen while printing a label or when the unit is overwhelmed with multiple pending tasks.

The simplest solution to this situation is to reset the device. You can reset your LabelWriter 450 by doing the following:

  • Power off your printer. The LabelWriter 450 has no on-and-off switch, but you can unplug it. It may take a while for it to shut down completely because its capacitor stores up energy. To quicken the process, you can press the blue button repeatedly until its light stops glowing. 
  • Connect the printer again to a power source. It should be ready to print again.
  • If maneuvering the power source does not work, unplug the unit once more. This time, you may have to reboot your computer before plugging it back.

If this problem occurs more frequently, better printer maintenance could help. If it still happens too often despite good upkeep, you may have to have your gadget checked or replaced.

How Do You Get Your Dymo LabelWriter 450 Out of a Printing Error State?

This is an issue that Windows users frequently encounter, although it is not unheard of among Mac users. To get your Dymo LabelWriter 450 out of a supposed error state, you may have to reset your printer or reboot your PC as we described above. If the problem persists despite these measures, the following may help:

  • If you’re using a Windows PC, go to Start > Devices & Printers. Right-click on your Dymo LabelWriter 450 and choose “Printer properties.” In the “Ports” tab, unclick “Enable bidirectional support.” Click “OK.” This usually works for systems running on Windows Vista or 7. 
  • If you’re using a Mac or another Windows version, find out if the problem is due to incorrect label loading, installation issues, power or USB cable disconnection, maintenance problems, etc. Alternatively, you may use Dymo’s “Diagnose” function. Once you figure out the problem, you may try our troubleshooting suggestions to get rid of it.

If your printer goes into an error state immediately after installation, the fault may lie in the setup process. You may have to do it again, making sure that you get the appropriate software the next time.
