Labels & Packaging Guide

1. What is the Difference Between Direct Thermal & Thermal Transfer?

Direct thermal printing requires a heat-sensitive label material which darkens when in direct contact with the printhead. Applications include receipts, shipping labels, postage, barcode, price tags, tickets, coupons, visitor passes and many more.

On the other hand, thermal transfer printing requires heating a ribbon on a label material to produce high durability prints and images. Examples include certification labels, wristbands, circuit board traceability code, and permanent identification.

2. Does a Thermal Printer Use Ink?

No. Direct thermal printers, such as the Zebra label printer, Brother thermal printer, ROLLO label printer and DYMO label printer, do not use a separate ink or ribbon. This means you will never have to buy ink to refill your thermal printer. What you only need is a stock of label rolls, which you can buy at a budget-price at enKo Products.

3. How do I measure a label?

1. First, measure the surface of your packaging container where you want to put your label. You can use this free printable ruler from enKo Products.

2. Next, choose a standard label size that best fits your measurement. You can check out the standard label sizes at enKo Products.

3. To specify the label measurement from your supplier, you can use the photo below as a guide.

4. Use the right label printer to seamlessly print your labels. We recommend the following reliable label printers:

Roll Labels Basic

1. What are Roll Labels?

Roll labels are continuous rolls of labels that are spun around a cardboard spool (core). Core diameter sizes are usually in 1” or 3”. Roll labels are built for speed, bulk labeling and require less space than sheet labels. They can be customizable in terms of size, shape, and color depending on the label model and printer you use.

2. How many labels are in a roll?

Roll labels from different brands come with different labels per roll.

  • Dymo - 220 to 1000 Labels per Roll
  • Zebra - 250 to 2900 Labels per Roll
  • Brother - 200 to 800 Labels per Roll
3. How are roll labels printed?

They can only be printed on using dedicated label printers (direct thermal printers, thermal transfer printers, or inkjet roll printers). The labels are spun around a cardboard spool and mounted inside the roll printer. When it's time to print, the machine feeds the label through and your printed labels come out one by one.

4. What is a label core in roll labels?

A label core is a stable cardboard spool that centers the spun label roll. If you’re looking at the core size, this talks about the inner core diameter of the roll label. Fanfold labels and sheet labels don’t have cores.

5. What is the core size of Roll Labels?

Label core sizes are usually offered in 3” or 1”, depending on the application where it’s used. You will need to know the label core size to know if it is compatible with the size of your machine. The standard core size 3” and 1” of roll labels are usually compatible with the majority of label applicator machines.

6. Where to best use roll labels?
  • If you need to constantly switch applications like printing barcode labels, to shipping labels to name tags, roll labels are the most flexible options as they are easy to customize.
  • If you need to speed up the labeling process as roll labels are easier to dispense and apply
  • If you don’t want to waste on ink as direct thermal printers don’t need it
  • If color is not that important as roll labels have a limited number of color options.
  • If you need consistent label sizes for shipping, address, barcode, postage labeling applications like (UPC, FNSKU, FBA labels, barcodes, etc)
  • If you want cost-effective labeling solutions that need not last long against heat and light.
  • If you’re printing labels in bulk
  • If you want to print-on-demand

Comparison

1. What’s the difference between your roll labels and sheet labels?

Roll labels are wound around cardboard or plastic, while sheet labels are on a flat surface. If you plan to buy a label maker, then roll labels are what you need. Sheet labels on the other hand are printed on an 8.5” x 11” sheet and are optimized for laser or inkjet printing.

For more guidance on choosing between different label types, read our guide: Fanfold Labels vs. Roll Labels

2. Are Roll Labels more expensive than Cut-to-Size Labels?

Roll labels are more cost-effective than cut to size labels for quantities of 1000 and above. This means they are more applicable if you use labels on a regular basis, such as for barcodes, shipping labels, etc. But for smaller quantities of labeling needs, you can use cut-to-size labels.

3. What’s the difference between die-cut and continuous rolls?

Continuous labels are a type of roll labels that have a continuous length and need a printer’s built-in cutter to seamlessly trim the length you need. You can easily customize the length you need for each printing session. For example, if you have a 4” x 100 ft label, you can cut it up to 2”, 3”, 6” in length as needed.

Die-cut roll labels on the other hand are supplied with pre-sized labels in a roll. The number of labels per roll is indicated by the manufacturer and you can choose them according to the label dimensions required for the product.

Buying Guide

1. What should I consider when choosing roll labels?

To pick the right label, choose according to the ff:

  • label size (for shipping, postages, barcodes, name tags, etc)
  • adhesive type (permanent, removable)
  • material (paper, film),

The first 2 items are easier to choose from as they can be determined from the standard sizes and adhesive for your label application. But the third one, which is the material, you have a lot of other circumstances to look into. Do you want it to be waterproof, heat-resistant, or simply durable enough to withstand normal weather conditions?

You can look at our guide for more information: How to Choose the Right Label Material for Your Product

2. What standard roll label sizes do you have?

We have a variety of roll label sizes available for different direct thermal printers such as:

Available as die-cut labels or continuous-length, we have a plethora of options to choose from for different applications. Circle labels, square labels, rectangular labels, and rounded corner labels are also available.

Link to related article: How to Measure the Correct Label Size for Your Products

3. What kind of materials are your roll labels made from?

enKo Products have paper and film label materials for our different brands of direct thermal printer labels.

  • Brother DK: Paper and film (yellow or clear labels)
  • Dymo labels: Offered as paper or polypropylene options
  • Zebra labels: smooth, bright paper

Paper labels are the most common materials for barcodes, addresses, and multipurpose applications.

Film labels are made from polyester or polyethylene plastic material that is more durable and more resistant to environmental conditions, but still not as strong as thermal transfer labels. They are strong enough to withstand short-term outdoor labeling applications as they can sustain water and oil at some level.

In terms of appearance, transparent film labels are usually more attractive and dramatic. For example, you can stick them against glass panels and windows for a “floating text” appearance.

4. Are your roll labels weatherproof?

Sheet Label FAQ

1. What are sheet labels?

Sheet labels are used to print labels in different shapes and sizes using your inkjet or laser printer. They are usually printed on sturdy liners in 8.5″ x 11″ sizes (also called full sheet labels). This keeps them flat so that you can store them easily. They are available in different shapes like square, circle, oval, rectangle, die-cut, and rounded corners. Our sheet labels are rectangular and have rounded corners.

Moreover, sheet labels are designed for manual hand applications and for low-volume label printing applications. For automatic applications in larger quantities, roll labels are more appropriate.

Our bright white sheet labels are made from paper.

Most often than not, a do-it-yourself move is more cost effective than hiring home movers which can cost around  $800 and $2,000.

3. How important is it to have a list of all the home moving supplies?

Very important. A complete home moving supplies checklist is crucial for an upcoming move, especially if you plan to do the packing by yourselves. Make sure you coordinate with the right truckers, complete your moving supplies, transfer utility bill addresses, and inform the right people about your move.

4. How can I find moving boxes during the pandemic?

You can order online new and affordable moving boxes at Home Depot or Office Depot. During this pandemic, it is not advisable to borrow moving boxes. The bulk of house move materials you need would greatly depend on a number of things we like to point out. These are:

  • The length of time you stay in your current home, as it reflects the amount of items accumulated in your house.
  • The number of people staying in the house. There might be a family of 4 in a 3 bedroom house, which means you have more things to declutter than a 3-member family.
  • The size footprint of your home.
